Please take a moment to have a look at just a few of the highlights of life here in Killeshandra National School!
This term, the Junior and Middle Rooms have been completing SESE projects on the topic of Life Cycles.
The Junior Room completed a project on Hatching Chicks. We put hen eggs in an incubator and waited patiently for 21 days. We had to keep an eye on temperature and add water to keep the humidity right!
On day 20, our first chick hatched! On the following days, we had 7 more chicks, so we had 8 chicks in total – Homer, Derek, Yellow Rose, Stephen, Dark Vader, Daffodil, Bart and Young-young.
We also learned about the life cycle of the hen, the parts of an egg and how to incubate an egg. We also experimented with whisking an egg white.
The Middle Room completed a project Butterflies. We watched our 5 caterpillars grow and change into chrysalides, then finally emerge as butterflies! We kept a observation record, and also learned about the life cycles of other animals and plants.
We released our butterflies on a lovely sunny day – hopefully they have laid their eggs and the life cycle will continue!
Both classrooms worked very hard on these projects, and we got together to share our wonderful work. Well done everyone!
The Junior Room planted some seeds back in March. We planted sunflowers, lettuce, beetroot, onions, pole beans and potatoes. We transfered these into our raised beds in April. With the help of Mrs Sweeney, we watered and weeded the plants. Everyone got to bring home some lettuce and onions a little while ago. We are looking forward to having some more fresh produce to bring home soon!
We also planted strawberry plants – we are eagerly awaiting them to ripen so we can taste them!
The Killeshandra Fire Service brought their fire engine to school yesterday and parked up in the Church yard for us to have a look around. They showed us all the different parts of the engine, let us try on their helmets and have a go with the fire hose! They also explained some of the different work they do and ways that we can stay safe, as well as answering lots of our questions.
It was great fun, and we learned a lot about the very important work of the Fire Service. Thank you to Ronan and Pauric for bringing the fire engine in to school, and for all you do to help our community.
Some of the organisers of the Killeshandra Camino called in to school to present 6th Class with small gift as they finish their time in Killeshandra N.S. Each child received a lovely bag as a keepsake. Thank you very much to everyone from the Killeshandra Camino, we wish you every success with your event on 20th June.
We were delighted to welcome Mr William Olphert and Mrs Lavinia Tilson from the Ulster Scots Agency to school yesterday. Over the last number of years, we have taken part in a number of different events and projects with them.
We showed some photos and the children shared their memories and experiences of story-telling and language workshops, a twinning project with a school from Coleraine, a trip to the Ulster American Folk Park, dancing lessons, piping lessons and drumming lessons.
Our visitors from the Ulster Scots Agency were very impressed with everything we had experienced and our engagement in the programme, and we were delighted when Mr. Olphert presented us with a Flagship School Programme award as recognition for all our hard work.
Thank you so much to the Ulster Scots Agency – all of the tutors and trips were fully funded by the Ulster Scots Agency at no expense to the school, and the children had lots of new experiences through the programme. Thank you also to Mr. Olphert and Mrs. Tilson for joining us yesterday. We look forward to continuing the partnership with the Ulster Scots Agency in the future.
A huge CONGRATULATIONS to the Killeshandra team who won their Cumann na mBunscol final in Breffni Park on Friday afternoon.
In a very close match against Corlurgan N.S., the boys gave a fantastic display of determination, teamwork and skill and came away with the cup. Their weeks of hard work in training paid off, and the team represented both Killeshandra N.S. and Scoil BhrÃde with pride.
A special word of thanks to Ms Leinster and Máire from Scoil BhrÃde who coached the team and brought the cup home to Killeshandra for the first time in many years!
After the match, the boys were welcomed back to Killeshandra and enjoyed a well-deserved celebration in the Lough Bawn.
Congratulations again boys, we are very proud of you all!
We had our last PeacePlus day for this school year with St Mogue’s N.S. today when they came to visit us. All of our activities this year have been based on the theme of creativity with a focus on Art, Music and Drama, and today was no different. We enjoyed a drumming workshop, made all sorts of wonderful creations in junk art and played team games with Shaun. It was wonderful to see the pupils from both schools working and playing so well together. We even had time for some ice-cream! It was a lovely end to another great year with St Mogue’s N.S. and we look forward to continuing the partnership next year.
We thought the Killeshandra Boys’ team were through to the final after their Blitz last week, but they had another semi-final match to play today.
On a very hot day in Templeport, the boys played a great game and were the resounding winners – a fantastic achievement! They are now looking forward to the final in Breffni Park on Friday 5th June.
We went down to Scoil BhrÃde this afternoon to welcome the team home and congratulate them all on their win – well done everyone, and good luck in the final!
We stopped at the playground on the way home to continue the celebrations and enjoy the sunshine!
There was great excitement this morning as we headed off on the bus to Athlone for our School Tour. We went to the Athlone International Arena for a full day of activities with Let’s Go! It was an action packed day with running, climbing, riding, bouncing, rolling, sliding, throwing, reacting, racing and a whole lot more! Everyone had a great day – fortunately the children will get an extra day off to rest tomorrow as the staff have a curriculum training day!
We had some very special visitors today! We invitied the children and staff from Circle of Friends preschool to come and have a look around our school. The children enjoyed some treats and playing in our classroom, but the highlight of their visit was meeting our chicks! Thank you so much for coming to visit us!
