Please take a moment to have a look at just a few of the highlights of life here in Killeshandra National School!
The Junior Room had their annual teddy bear picnic with Noah today. We all headed off to the playground with our teddies, some picnic blankets and the picnic basket. We enjoyed some time in the palyground with our teddies before tucking into our picnic. We had some of ourvery own strawberries grown on our strawberry plant in school, some home baked rice krispie buns and top hats, some crisps and sweets. We had a great time!
The Junior Room completed their last theme of the year in Aister – Summer!
We made boats and tested them out on the water. We had to think about the structure of the boat and make sure no water could get on board. Then we added some passengers to see how many our boat could carry before sinking! We also made some colourful tinfoil fish and created a background for them.
We made lots of creations in the sand – we had castles, tunnels, moates and mounds! It was great to see all the boys and girls work together and make wonderful creations.
This morning, the whole school headed off on the Killeshandra Loop Walk. It was a lovely walk through the forest and alongside the lake, with lots of sticks, pine cones and flowers to collect on the way. Everyone from Junior Infants to 6th Class chatted and encouraged each other along, lending a helping hand when needed. We took our time with lots of stops, and everyone completed the full Loop Walk. Well done, everyone!
The Student Council have been busy over the last few days organising a special treat for us. The went to Costcutter Killeshandra last week and arranged for everyone to get an ice-cream with a choice of toppings – a huge thank you to the staff in Gorby’s for looking after us so well. The ice-cream was just what we needed after our long walk!
Today was our Sports’ Day! We didn’t let the drizzly weather this morning put us off – we took part in running, three-legged, egg and spoon and sack races, team relays, games and challenges before lunch. The sun even made an appearance this afternoon for throw the welly and tug of war, as well as soccer and rounders at the GAA pitch after the Infants went home.
It was an action packed day with lots of fun and laughter from start to finish. As well as lots of athletic talent on display, it was wonderful to see great teamwork and determination, with everyone encouraging one another and celebrating all our successes. Well done everyone!
We had a very special visitor in school this afternoon – past principal and good friend of the school, Mrs Beattie, came in to see us and present the Leila Beattie Awards to 6th Class.
This year, all the children in the school selected the qualities and attributes they most associated with our 6th Class students, with the top 3 words selected to describe them. We have lots of kind, active, hardworking, fair, willing, friendly, funny, confident, caring and capable students leaving our school this year – well done everyone!
Mrs Beattie presented 6th Class with a certificate (and a giant chocolate bar!) to mark the occasion. Thank you to Mrs Beattie for joining us on a special day in the lives of 6th Class, and for all the treats you brought for everyone else!
This term, the Junior and Middle Rooms have been completing SESE projects on the topic of Life Cycles.
The Junior Room completed a project on Hatching Chicks. We put hen eggs in an incubator and waited patiently for 21 days. We had to keep an eye on temperature and add water to keep the humidity right!
On day 20, our first chick hatched! On the following days, we had 7 more chicks, so we had 8 chicks in total – Homer, Derek, Yellow Rose, Stephen, Dark Vader, Daffodil, Bart and Young-young.
We also learned about the life cycle of the hen, the parts of an egg and how to incubate an egg. We also experimented with whisking an egg white.
The Middle Room completed a project Butterflies. We watched our 5 caterpillars grow and change into chrysalides, then finally emerge as butterflies! We kept a observation record, and also learned about the life cycles of other animals and plants.
We released our butterflies on a lovely sunny day – hopefully they have laid their eggs and the life cycle will continue!
Both classrooms worked very hard on these projects, and we got together to share our wonderful work. Well done everyone!
The Junior Room planted some seeds back in March. We planted sunflowers, lettuce, beetroot, onions, pole beans and potatoes. We transfered these into our raised beds in April. With the help of Mrs Sweeney, we watered and weeded the plants. Everyone got to bring home some lettuce and onions a little while ago. We are looking forward to having some more fresh produce to bring home soon!
We also planted strawberry plants – we are eagerly awaiting them to ripen so we can taste them!
The Killeshandra Fire Service brought their fire engine to school yesterday and parked up in the Church yard for us to have a look around. They showed us all the different parts of the engine, let us try on their helmets and have a go with the fire hose! They also explained some of the different work they do and ways that we can stay safe, as well as answering lots of our questions.
It was great fun, and we learned a lot about the very important work of the Fire Service. Thank you to Ronan and Pauric for bringing the fire engine in to school, and for all you do to help our community.
Some of the organisers of the Killeshandra Camino called in to school to present 6th Class with small gift as they finish their time in Killeshandra N.S. Each child received a lovely bag as a keepsake. Thank you very much to everyone from the Killeshandra Camino, we wish you every success with your event on 20th June.
