Today was the first day of our Hot School Meals programme – as you can see from our faces, they went down a treat! We can’t wait to try all the other meals we ordered for the rest of the week!
Planetarium visit
Today we were delighted to have a visit from Rok from the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium. Rok set up the portable planetarium dome in the Community Centre (we had nowhere big enough in school!) and each class went for a show.
When we stepped into the dome, we made ourselves comfortable then Rok took us on a tour of the night sky and the planets in our Solar System – it was fascinating! He explained all about the stars, sun, moon and planets and answered all our questions. Thank you Rok, it was an amazing experience!
Spring News
Since we returned from our Easter hoildays, we have been busy with lots of different events and activities.
Each classroom planted some fruits and vegetables that we recieved as part of the Incredible Edibles programme – potatoes, strawberry plants and lettuce, chive, turnip, carrot and spinach seeds. Hopefully we will have lots of homegrown fruit and vegetables to enjoy this summer!
We also finished up our Volleyball coaching with Donal from Cavan Sports Partnership – we really enjoyed learning a new sport and playing some matches. Thank you Donal!
We also started a block of GAA coaching with Karen from Cavan GAA, and are looking forward to the rest of the sessions. Some of the children in 5th and 6th Classes have also started training for Cumann na nBunscol with Scoil BhrÃde.
The Senior Room are enjoying a series of Art lessons with Mrs Comiskey – they have been learning about mixing colours and have already produced some beautiful paintings!
This week is our Food Dudes week and we have been enjoying a selection of delicious fruits and vegetables every day.
We are also really looking forward to getting our hot school lunches next week – there has been lots of excitement as we have been checking out the menus and making our choices! There are lots of other things to look forward to over the next couple of months as well – swimming, Active School Week, more Creative Schools activities, our school tour, Sports’ Day… the list goes on – it will be a great term!

Rev Sam and Georgina took us on a special journey this morning as we thought about the Easter Story. We started with Jesus riding into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, followed by the Last Supper. We then went into the church to think about Jesus’ death on the cross before finding the empty tomb on Easter morning.
Thank you Rev Sam and Georgina for making the Easter story come alive for us. Happy Easter everyone!
Kindness Week
We have been celebrating Kindness Week in school this week.
For homework, we had to compete different acts of kindness for others – we managed to complete lots of kind deeds in a few days!
We have also been watching out for kind deeds in school and adding these to our jar of kindness. We read some of these in Assembly this morning – well done everyone!
This morning we went on a hunt around the school grounds to find some Kindness Quotes.
We also enjoyed drawing and writing on the yard with chalk, focusing on the theme of Kindness.
We also painted some rocks today. When they are dry, we will put them out in our school garden to remind us of everything we learned during Kindness Week.
We raised our new flag to mark the end of Kindness Week – each time we look at it, we will be reminded to bà cineálta, be kind!
Clayotics Workshop
We had a lovely workshop today as part of our Creative Schools programme with Louise Swords. Lousie brought a special kind of air drying modelling clay for us to use and each classroom made different Spring animals. We learned how to make different shapes and use different techniques to make our pieces. The Junior Room made sheep, the Middle Room made chicks and the Senior Room made bunnies – we think they turned out great!
Thank you very much Louise for a very enjoyable workshop, we are very proud of what we made!
Dog Groomers
A huge thank you to Deirdre and all her team at the Dog Groomers at Cavan Institute for the amazing time that 5th and 6th Class had this morning. The children loved being able to work through all the stages involved in grooming a dog – from the initial health check to shampooing, drying, completing the final finishing touches and not forgetting the tidying up afterwards! It was such a fantastic experience and gave us a great insight into the work of a dog groomer. Thanks again Deirdre.
Seachtain na Gaeilge
This morning we marked the end of our celebrations for Seachtain na Gaeilge with a céilà sa halla. We had singing, dancing, poems, musical performances and even the haka as Gaeilge! Bhà maidin iontach ceoil, rince agus spraoi againn!
Today was also the last day of our Book Fair – thank you to everyone who supported this event and bought books and stationery, we will be able to add some books to our school library as a result.
We had a competition as part of the Book Fair – the children had to choose a book from the Book Fair and think about what book the author might write next. They designed a cover, including a blurb, for their new book. Thank you to Mrs Comiskey and Mrs Sweeney who judged the competition and a huge well done to our winners – we would love to read these books!
Book Fair
We have the Scolastic Book Fair in school this week. There are lots of books available for sale in each classroom, as well as some stationery. We had a quick look today when the books were delivered after lunch, and are looking forward to having more time during the week to choose some lovely new books and stationery!
We presented our awards for February in Assembly this morning. Congratulations to our Reader and Handwriter of the Month, and a big well done to the Red Group for their fantastic teamwork during our creative challenge a couple of weeks ago. Great work everyone!
World Book Day
Today is World Book Day.
Everyone brought in their favourite thing to read and we shared these with our friends.
There were lots of lovely picture books, comics, information books, novels, magazines… we love reading all kinds of different things!
We also took part in a couple of webinars to mark the occasion. The Junior Room enjoyed listening to stories as part of a webinar organised by the Reading Eggs programme we use in school and at home.
This afternoon, 3rd – 6th Classes enjoyed a webinar with Edwina Guckian, an author who we hope to work more with as part of the Creative Schools project. Edwina read from her book and shared some folklore with us. She also had us all up dancing after she told us stories about house dances and dancing for the craic!
