Cavan Adventure Centre

We were delighted to be invited back to Cavan Adventure Centre yesterday for a special visit. Our school was selected to take part in Hearts & Minds in Nature – a cross-border biodiversity and adventure experience for students, delivered under the PEACEPLUS
initiative and funded by Cavan County Council. This visit was fully funded, including all activites, lunch and transport costs. This was an amazing opportunity and we were delighted to accept, along with St Mogue’s N.S. and Florencecourt Primary School.

Everyone spent some time out on the water – we all got a turn on the inflatable water park and were out on paddling in the kayaks and swans. We also did a scavenger hunt around the site, looking for lots of different leaves, flowers and berries. Heather Bothwell helped us to investigate some of the creatures living in our lakes under the microscope, and we had the chance to find some creatures of our own as well when we went net fishing. There was even time for some tug-of-war!

After a busy morning, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch – we were treated to pizza and drinks before we got ready for our afternoon activities.

Many thanks to Nuala and everyone at Cavan Adventure Centre for a wonderful day!

Welcome back!

Welcome back to the 2025 – 2026 school year here in Killeshandra N.S.!

We are delighted to welcome six Junior Infant pupils and one new Senior Infant pupil this year – they have had a great few days and have settled in so well.

At our beginning of year Assembly this morning, we gave our new pupils a special welcome as they introduced themselves to the rest of the school. We spent some time talking about how we are encouraging a culture of kindness within the school. Mrs Richardson also reminded everyone about our Bí Cineálta policy, launched last year, which will help to ensure our school is a safe and happy place for everyone.

An exciting addition to our school this year is our Sensory Area. Everyone had the chance to explore and spend some time in the Sensory Area this week – we love the beanbag, tent, wobble board, wall crocodile, sequin frames, tactile tiles, weighted pets and fidget toys! This will be a great addition to our school, and we look forward to making good use of it over the coming year.

We are really looking forward to another fantastic year (there are lots of exciting things planned already!) as we grow and learn together in Killeshandra N.S.

Farewell 6th Class!

Today we said goodbye to our class of 2025 with a special assembly to celebrate their time with us here in Killeshandra N.S. There were lots of laughs (and a few tears!) as 6th Class shared some words of advice and sang some of their favourite songs. Each pupil was presented with some gifts to mark their time in the school – a framed class photo, a t-shirt signed by everyone in the school, a certificate, a Bible and a copy of all their self-portraits from their 8 years with us. Rev Sam also shared a verse from Psalms, reminding us that the Bible is a lamp for our feet and a light on our paths – both for 6th Class as they move on to Secondary school, and us all as we live day by day.

Our assembly finished with a slideshow of photos of 6th Class over the years as everyone enjoyed some delicious ice cream.

To finish off the day, we cheered 6th Class out the school gates as we wished them well for the future.

From all of us here at Killeshandra N.S., we wish you all the very best as you move on to the next chapter of your lives. We will miss you all – don’t forget to come back and visit!

Senior Room visit to the shop

The Seniors took a trip to the newly opened shop here in Killeshandra this morning. Each pupil had €5 to spend – this was some of their profits from their very successful JEP work this year. Everyone enjoyed some lovely treats!

Cavan Adventure Centre

The Middle and Senior Rooms had an extra special end-of-term treat today – they headed off to Cavan Adventure Centre to meet with some of the pupils from St Mogue’s N.S. for our last PeacePlus event of the year.

The sun shone all day and Cavan’s lakes looked at their very best! When we arrived, we got our wetsuits, bouyancy aids and helmets on, then spent all morning kayaking and paddleboarding on the lake. After a couple of hours on the water, everyone was definitely ready for lunch! This afternoon, we crossed the rope bridge before taking a boat ride out to the inflatable waterpark in the middle of the lake. This was the highlight of the day!

Everyone had a fantastic time – the sound of laughter and squeals of excitement were a joy to hear, and there were lots of helping hands to pull each other back out of the water!

Thank you so much to all the staff at Cavan Adventure Centre for looking after us so well – we are looking forward to returning very soon!

Teddy Bears Picnic

The Junior Room had a lovely day at school today – the Middle and Senior Rooms were away at Cavan Adventure Centre, so they brought their teddy bears to school and headed off to the playground for a Teddy Bears Picnic!

They had great fun in the sun, playing with their bears and sharing a picnic together!

Sports Day

What a fabulous day for Sports Day! We had great fun today as we ran our class races, pulled tug-of-war, threw the welly and had another go in the giant sacks! Well done everyone!

JEP Award

5th and 6th Class received fantastic news this week – they were one of only 13 schools from across Ireland chosen as award winners by the Junior Entrepreneur Programme. AGL Holders received the Creative Pioneers Award which recognised their creativity and ingenuity throughout the product design and production process, as well as in their overall approach to their class business.

As well as receiving this award, they were also awarded Merits in four other categories – Genius Product, Star Submission, Dynamic Designers and Finance Wizards.

A huge congratulations to all the 5th and 6th Class pupils for this amazing achievement. The future is bright for these young entrepreneurs!

Keep an eye on next week’s Anglo Celt, where there will be a write-up on their great achievement, as well as some photographs.

Leila Beattie Awards

Leila Beattie, past Principal of our school, came to visit us this afternoon to present 6th Class with the Leila Beattie Awards.

Each of our 6th Class pupils have contributed so much to the life of our school over the last 8 years, and we were delighted to be able to celebrate them today. They each received a certificate and a chocolate treat – very well done to you all!

Mrs Beattie also made sure that everyone went home with a treat today – thank you, Mrs Beattie!

We also had a few other visitors in school this afternoon – special thanks to two of our local firefighters here in Killeshandra who came to speak to us about fire safety. We learned lots about how to stay safe and they took the time to answer lots of our questions.

A few past pupils came back to visit us today and speak to the Senior Room about life in Secondary School – it was lovely to see you again.

Today was also our last Swimming Lesson for the year – we’ve made great progress over the last 6 weeks, and enjoyed a turn on the slides today!

Sports Day with St Mogue’s N.S.

Today we headed off to St Mogue’s N.S. to join with them for Sports Day. After all the rain yesterday, we were so fortunate with the weather – the clouds cleared as the day went on and we had lovely sunshine by the afternoon.

There was some great competition this morning as we ran the sprint, egg and spoon, sack and 3-legged races.

After a well earned lunch break, we had great fun working together in teams as we completed some challenges – penalty kicks, tug-of-war, Aussie Rules football, cross the river and gutter ball. The seniors also had a go at the giant sack race – they discovered this was trickier than they thought it would be!

As a special treat this afternoon, we all enjoyed a very well-deserved ice cream!

Everyone returned home this afternoon tired but happy after a fun-filled day together. Thank you to everyone at St. Mogue’s for making us so welcome – we’ve really enjoyed visiting your school this year and getting to know you all!
