Performance Day

5th and 6th Class took part in Performance Day today – as you can see from the pictures, there was a huge range of skills and interests on display. Well done everyone!

Mummers Event

We held our special Summer Mummers Event with Edwina Guckian today. There was lots of colour and noise as we paraded down to the hall. Edwina led us in a few dances – the Stack of Barley, the Clap Dance and the Brush Dance before we finished with everyone joining in as we danced Shoe the Donkey.

Thank you to everyone who came to join us today, and a special thank you to Edwina for teaching us about the Mummers and preparing us for today’s event.

Sponsored Walk

Today was our Sponsored Walk, organised by the Parents’ Association. We were very fortunate with the weather – it was dry and sunny for us the whole time we were walking, and the showers passed so we could eat our ice-cream outside when we came back to school.

Thank you to the parents who joined us for our walk and to everyone who sponsored us. An extra special thank you also goes to the children in the Senior Room who treated everyone to delicious ice-cream (with lots of toppings!) with some of their profits from their JEP sales. Everyone had a great day!

Mummers Workshops with Edwina Guckian

Edwina Guckian has joined us in school for a couple of days this week as part of our Creative Schools work. Edwina has been teaching us about the Mummers and their traditions in this part of the country. We have been learning a few dances (some of us have even mastered the brush dance!) and today 4th-6th Class made their own Mummers straw hats.

We enoyed learning about the Mummers so much, we decided to set up our own Killeshandra Mummers group! Edwina is coming back next Wednesday and we are going to hold a special event in the Martin Memorial Hall, next door to the school. Everyone is very welcome to join us as we parade to the hall for a Summer celebration. Come along and see our amazing straw hats, join in with some dances and try your best to identify us in our costumes!

School Tour to The Crystal Maze

We had our School Tour on Friday! We headed off early in the morning to The Crystal Maze just outside Kingscourt.

We had a jam-packed day of activities – each team had to work together to collect as many crystals as possible by completing a huge range of challenges. There was great teamwork on display as we ran through the maze, completed obstacle courses, tested our balance, worked on our co-ordination and practised our aim, as well as solving puzzles and riddles along the way.

The final challenge of the day was the river walk – this was a definite highlight for lots of us! Well done to each team who met their target of earning 100 crystals – we came home with a beautiful crystal vase as our prize!

Thank you to everyone at The Crystal Maze – we had a wonderful day!

Anything But a Backpack Day!

Our Student Council organised an Anything But a Backpack Day today. It was the last day we needed to bring in our homework folders this year, so we finished in style!

There were all sorts on show – buckets, suitcases, wheelbarrows, fish tanks, guitar cases, pillowcases, lamb feeders, pushchairs and even a donkey! Everyone had a chance to show off their ideas during a parade in the yard first thing this morning, as the Student Council judged the entries – they had some very difficult decisions to make!

Well done to everyone – there were some amazing ideas on display! A special congratualtions to our 3 winning entries – they each recieved a prize of €5. Thank you also to our Student Council for organising such a fun event!

Transition to Secondary School Workshop

Thank you very much to Jo and Carol in the FOCUS Centre who invited 6th Class to take part in series of Transition to Secondary School workshops over the last 3 weeks. The children learned so much from the workshops which will help them as they move on to Secondary school in September.

Bí Cineálta

We have complied a new Bí Cineálta policy for our school. As part of this, we have a student friendly version (see below) which is displayed in the school. The complete policy is also available in the Policy section of our website.

Yard Markings

We had the markings in our yard repainted this week – everything is looking fresh and vibrant! We also added a couple of new features – we have an alphabet snake and a grid to play noughts and crosses. Our outdoor space is looking wonderful – we are really enjoying making use of it during the lovely weather!
