4th Class have been busy over the last few weeks getting our school garden ready for planting. They wed the boxes, refreshed the soil and today helped us plant some vegetables that we hope will grow over the Winter. We planted garlic, onions and broad beans – hopefully we will have a good crop to harvest next year!
History Speaker
We had a visit from Aiden Dockery, a speaker with Heritage in Schools, today. Aiden came with a huge range of objects and artefacts to share with us – he covered a wide range of topics including the Titanic, World War 1 and Michael Collins. We had the opportunity to learn about Aiden’s uncle who died in World War 1 and look at some of the memorabilia he had on display.
We also brought in some artefacts to show Aiden – it was very interesting to see all the different objects that we had at home. Thank you very much Aiden for a very informative day!
Maths Week
We have been celebrating Maths Week in school this week. Each classroom enjoyed lots of different Maths games and activities during the week.
On Thursday, went on a walk through Killeshandra looking for 2D shapes in the environment.
Today we got together in our teams for the first time this year. Each team had the chance to play games, investigate shapes and see what they could make with our new giant polygons. We had lots of fun while we were learning!
Active School Flag
Our Active School Committee met last week for the first time and had lots of great suggestions for developing our school as an Active School.
This week, we were able to put a couple of their suggestions into place – we enjoyed a dance on the yard at lunchtime today with some music chosen by the Middle Room. Check out our moves!
It was also fantastic to have some of the Senior Room back on duty as Playground Leaders this week, organising activities and teaching games to some of the younger pupils. We can’t wait to see what other games we can play next week!
Cross Country
Congratulations and thank you to the team of boys and girls from 4th-6th Classes who represented our school at the Cavan National Schools Cross Country in Killinkere on Wednesday.
They all ran so well in difficult conditions and had great fun on the day – well done everyone!
Assembly
We were delighted to welcome Simon and Jayne from CEF back into school for Assembly this morning. We loved singing a new song, listening to a Bible story and playing pin the tail on the donkey for our quiz. Thank you Simon and Jayne for sharing with us!
We also announced the winners of our Junior and Senior Handwriters of the Month and Reader of the Month at Assembly today – well done to you all!
Yesterday, anyone who was interested in representing their classroom on our new Active School Committee spoke to their class about the ideas they have to help our school be a more active place. Each classroom then voted to choose a boy and girl to sit on the Committee and the results were announced at Assembly this morning. The new Committee members were presented with their Active School lanyards. Well done to everyone who shared their ideas with their class, and a special well done to our new Active School Committee – we look forward to working with you as we continue to be an Active School!
Cornafean Champions!
Congratulations to three of our pupils who play on the Cornafean U11 team – they recently played in the Cornafean Tournament and brought the cup they won into school this week – a fantastic achievement girls, well done!
Food Dudes
We have been enjoying another week of Food Dudes in school this week. Everyone received a portion of fruit and a portion of vegetables each day – apples, carrots, bananas, peppers, blueberries, cucumber and tomatoes, helping us to meet out target of 5-7 portions per day.
We’ve also been enjoying watching our Food Dudes videos each day, helping us to learn about why it is so important to eat a variety of food and vegetables to keep us strong and healthy.
Autumn Walk
This morning we made the most of the beautiful weather to go for a walk in the forest. We were identifying different types of trees and looking for signs of Autumn – we collected lots of leaves including sycamore, oak, beech, hazel and ash, as well as some fruits like acorns, beech nuts and hazel nuts.
Music Generation
The Junior and Middle Rooms have been enjoying the first few weeks of their Music Generation programme with Aisling O’Reilly. Each week, we meet Aisling in the hall for half an hour for lots of singing, rhythm activities and fun!
