Junior Entrepreneur Programme

5th and 6th Class have been busy working on the Junior Entrepreneur Programme and came up with super business ideas.

Each group had to present their idea to the ‘Dragons’. Everyone did a fantastic job explaining all the details relating to their projects.

As part of the programme, a local entrepreneur came to speak to the children about entrepreneurship and all that is involved in setting up and running a business. Many thanks to Mr Gerry Sheridan from Ice Cream Treats here in Killeshandra for coming to share his expertise with us.

Gerry also very kindly brought everyone in the school an ice-cream treat to enjoy – thank you very much!

Treat time!

We have been very busy and working really hard in school over the last few weeks – today we enjoyed a little treat as a reward. We watched a festive movie and enjoyed some delicious hot chocolate and cookies – it was a great day!

We also presented our Reader and Handwriter of the Month for November in assembly this week – well done everyone!

Steve’s Storytelling Session

Thank you very much to Steve the Storyteller for his session this afternoon, organised by the Ulster-Scots Agency. We thoroughly enjoyed his stories, and loved getting involved in the music and dance!

November Walk

We went for our monthly walk this morning – as part of our walk we carried out a survey of the car registrations we spotted around the town. The most common registration plate was CN, but there were registrations from all parts of Ireland to be seen!

‘In the Mix’

The Transition Year students from Cavan Royal and Loretto College staged their musical show ‘In the Mix’ in Ballinagh Community Hall this week. 5th and 6th Class were invited to attend and thoroughly enjoyed the show. It was great to see some of our past pupils on the stage and perform so well. Thank you to Mr Corley for his kind invitation, it was a wonderful experience.

Creature Crew

We had a fantastic visit this morning from the Creature Crew – a local animal rescue centre who take in, look after and rehome all kinds of animals. Glenn and Jonathan brought a selection of the animals they have at the moment for us to see – corn snakes, a tortoise, a cockatoo, a barn owl, a bearded dragon, a gecko, a tarantula and a python! Everyone who wanted to had the opportunity to hold the animals, and they told us about how they look after the animals.

It was fascinating to see these animals up close and amazing to hold them – we have lots of very brave boys and girls! Thank you so much to the Creature Crew for coming to share with us.

Senior Room Trip to Cavan Institute

5th & 6th class visited Cavan Institute on Monday as part of Science Week. They worked in the science lab and got to complete a whole range of experiments. The Science lecturer went through a PowerPoint presentation which focused on the Science of microbes and also explained about the harmful effects of consuming too much sugar. The children then swabbed their mouths/teeth and placed the results on petri dishes, examined onion cells under a microscope, examined the amounts of sugar in a whole range of foods and saw how the shell of an egg, which had been left in Coca Cola, completely dissolved!

Each child then got to see if their egg, which they had wrapped up in a whole range of protective layers, managed to survive being dropped from a height!

Before heading back to school, the children enjoyed some treats.

A huge thank you to Deirdre Donnelly for organising the trip to Cavan Institute. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Makermeet!

Last week, we had a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) workshop with Chris from Makermeet. The whole school took part as Chris explained what a ‘maker’ is and how we can all be makers. We worked together to make a dome from cardboard using special tools. It was amazing to see how all the pieces came together in the end to create the geodesic dome.

Thank you to Chris and to Cavan County Council who organised this workshop for us as part of Science Week. We are looking forward to using the tools we were given to make our own cardboard creations!

Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Each year in school we support the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal, filling shoeboxes with lots of practical and fun gifts for children in other parts of the world. Our shoeboxes were collected today to be sorted and sent off in time for Christmas – we had 46 shoeboxes, as well as a few more donated online.

Thank you so much to everyone who filled a box – there will be lots of very happy children when they open their gifts this Christmas!

Dress Up and Games Day

Today was Dress Up and Games Day in school to celebrate our half-term holidays. There were all sorts of unusual characters coming in through the school gates this morning – have a look at some of our costumes!

We brought in lots of different board games to play today – we really enjoyed being able to move between the classrooms and try lots of new games, as well as some old favourites.

During assembly this morning, we also presented the trophies to our Reader and Handwriters of the Month for October – well done everyone!
