Christmas Party!

We had a wonderful day at our Christmas Party! We played lots of games in the hall with our teams in the morning.

After break, we went back down to the hall to meet some parents, preschools and a very special visitor! Everyone enjoyed some delicious treats, we all received a beautiful present and we sang a few songs for Santa, Mrs Claus and Fionn the dog.

Santa also helped us to draw our Christmas Quiz Sheets – well done to all the winners, we hope you enjoy your prizes!

We came back up to school for lunch and enjoyed playing with our new gifts, before playing more party games for the rest of the afternoon.

Gingerbread

Today was a lovely day in school – we did some Christmas baking! Everyone went to the hall together and we made some delicious gingerbread.

There was lots of weighing and measuring as each group gathered their ingredients.

Then we followed the recipe carefully to rub the butter into the flour before we added the rest of the ingredients and mixed them together to make our gingerbread dough.

Next we rolled out the dough and cut it into some Christmas shapes!

Then it was time to put the gingerbread in the oven – there was a delicious smell in the hall while they were baking!

After lunch, when the gingerbread had cooled, it was time to decorate – we used melted chocolate, sweets, marshmallows and sprinkles to decorate our gingerbread.

Finally, the best part of all, it was time to taste – our gingerbread was delicious! Everyone had some gingerbread to bring home with them, as well as a copy of the recipe – maybe there will be some more gingerbread made at home over the Christmas period!

Christmas Competition winners

We were invited to take part in a Christmas art competition by the Killeshandra Christmas Lights committee – you might have spotted some of the wonderful entries on display around the town. Thank you to everyone who took part, and a special congratulations to two of our pupils who came 2nd in the Senior competition and 3rd in the Junior competition – well done!

Junior Entrepreneur Programme

5th and 6th Class have been busy working on the Junior Entrepreneur Programme and came up with super business ideas.

Each group had to present their idea to the ‘Dragons’. Everyone did a fantastic job explaining all the details relating to their projects.

As part of the programme, a local entrepreneur came to speak to the children about entrepreneurship and all that is involved in setting up and running a business. Many thanks to Mr Gerry Sheridan from Ice Cream Treats here in Killeshandra for coming to share his expertise with us.

Gerry also very kindly brought everyone in the school an ice-cream treat to enjoy – thank you very much!

Treat time!

We have been very busy and working really hard in school over the last few weeks – today we enjoyed a little treat as a reward. We watched a festive movie and enjoyed some delicious hot chocolate and cookies – it was a great day!

We also presented our Reader and Handwriter of the Month for November in assembly this week – well done everyone!

Steve’s Storytelling Session

Thank you very much to Steve the Storyteller for his session this afternoon, organised by the Ulster-Scots Agency. We thoroughly enjoyed his stories, and loved getting involved in the music and dance!

November Walk

We went for our monthly walk this morning – as part of our walk we carried out a survey of the car registrations we spotted around the town. The most common registration plate was CN, but there were registrations from all parts of Ireland to be seen!

‘In the Mix’

The Transition Year students from Cavan Royal and Loretto College staged their musical show ‘In the Mix’ in Ballinagh Community Hall this week. 5th and 6th Class were invited to attend and thoroughly enjoyed the show. It was great to see some of our past pupils on the stage and perform so well. Thank you to Mr Corley for his kind invitation, it was a wonderful experience.

Creature Crew

We had a fantastic visit this morning from the Creature Crew – a local animal rescue centre who take in, look after and rehome all kinds of animals. Glenn and Jonathan brought a selection of the animals they have at the moment for us to see – corn snakes, a tortoise, a cockatoo, a barn owl, a bearded dragon, a gecko, a tarantula and a python! Everyone who wanted to had the opportunity to hold the animals, and they told us about how they look after the animals.

It was fascinating to see these animals up close and amazing to hold them – we have lots of very brave boys and girls! Thank you so much to the Creature Crew for coming to share with us.

Senior Room Trip to Cavan Institute

5th & 6th class visited Cavan Institute on Monday as part of Science Week. They worked in the science lab and got to complete a whole range of experiments. The Science lecturer went through a PowerPoint presentation which focused on the Science of microbes and also explained about the harmful effects of consuming too much sugar. The children then swabbed their mouths/teeth and placed the results on petri dishes, examined onion cells under a microscope, examined the amounts of sugar in a whole range of foods and saw how the shell of an egg, which had been left in Coca Cola, completely dissolved!

Each child then got to see if their egg, which they had wrapped up in a whole range of protective layers, managed to survive being dropped from a height!

Before heading back to school, the children enjoyed some treats.
