The children in the Middle and Senior Rooms made and wrote Christmas cards for the senior citizens who meet in the Resource Centre here in Killeshandra. We hope they like their cards and have a lovely Christmas!
Christmas Assembly with Simon and Jayne
We love having Simon and Jayne Gibson from CEF in school for assembly. This morning was a special Christmas assembly as we went on a baby hunt! There was lots of dressing up, actions and songs as we worked through the Christmas story – we met Mary and Joseph, the shepherd, angels, wise men and finally baby Jesus!

The Hoity Toity Angel
Last night was our Nativity Play – we performed The Hoity-Toity Angel in Killeshandra Parish Church. It was a fantastic night! Everyone sang, danced and performed their very best as we told the story of the birth of Jesus. All the hard work in rehearsals paid off – we are very proud of you all!
Another busy week!
There was lots going on in Killeshandra N.S. this week! We had the dress rehearsal for our nativity play. We can’t wait to perfom The Hoity Toity Angel next Tuesday evening at 7.30 pm in Killeshandra Parish Church.
The Middle and Senior Rooms were in Dublin on Wednesday for their Peace Proms rehearsal. We headed off on the bus to the National Indoor Arena at the Sport Ireland Campus in Blanchardstown. It was a very interesting to have look around the amazing sports facilities there!
There were over 1000 children at the rehearsal, but there will be more than 2000 in the choir at the Concert in February! Greg Beardsell, the Peace Proms conductor, lead us through the songs we will be performing.
We still have lots of learning and practising to do before the big day, but we picked up lots of tips and advice from Greg to help us along the way. We’re really looking forward to our Concert on Sunday 4th February 2024 in the Simmonscourt Arena at the RDS!
We also completed our 4 week Olympic Movement Breaks challenge today – we have really enjoyed learning more about some of Ireland’s Olympic athletes and their sports, as well as getting active every day.
During Assembly this week, we presented our awards for the Reader and Handwriter of the Month for November, as well as our Excellent Effort award – well done everyone!
Sock Day!
As a fundraiser for our Parents’ Association, today was Sock Day in school! We had odd socks, fluffy socks, Christmas socks – all kinds of socks!
We have also been very busy rehearsing for our Nativity Play over the last few weeks. We will be performing The Hoity-Toity Angel in Killeshandra Parish Church at 7.30pm on Tuesday 12th December. We are really looking forward to showing off all our hard work!
The Eccentric Energy Show with Dr. Naomi Lavelle
Last Thursday we had a fantastic day with Dr. Naomi Lavelle. She set up her Eccentric Energy Show in the hall and each classroom joined her for a workshop. There were lots of of different experiments for us to get involved with as we learned about some of the rules of energy. Thank you so much Dr. Naomi, we had lots of fun!
Rugby Coaching
Thank you very much to Barry Carson from Cavan Rugby Club who started rugby coaching with the children today. The children really enjoyed learning lots of different skills. We can’t wait for next week’s session. Thanks again Barry, we really appreciate you giving up your time to come and coach us.
Ulster Scots
This week is Ulster-Scots Leid (Language) Week, and we were delighted to welcome Gary Blair from the Ulster Scots Agency into school this morning. Some of us met Gary last year when we took part in a twinning project with Castleroe Primary school and visited the Ulster American Folk Park.
Gary spent some time with us this morning teaching us some Ulster Scots words – it turns our we already knew some of them! Thank you very much Gary for a very enjoyable session!
Team Hope Shoeboxes
We have been collecting shoeboxes in school over the last few weeks for the Team Hope Shoebox appeal. Thank you to everyone who made a shoebox and brought it into school as well as those who donated online – 46 shoeboxes were collected today. We know these shoeboxes will make a lot of children very happy when they receive their special Christmas gifts.
Science Week
This week is Science Week – there were lots of investigations and experiments going on in all the classrooms! As well as being great fun, we were using lots of Science skills – we were planning, predicting, making, observing, measuring, investigating, questioning, recording, analysing, and evaluating!
The Junior Room mixed bread soda and vinegar to making dancing raisins and explored diffusion with skittles.
1st and 2nd Class explored forces, investigating how different objects moved on a ramp, changing the height and surface of the ramp and comparing this with their original results. They also made a lava lamp – they discovered that oil and water do not mix!
3rd and 4th Class focused on the topic of Colour for Science Week. They enjoyed investigating capillary action, chemical reactions and mixing colours.
5th and 6th Class had dancing raisins, volcanoes, slime, lava lamps and bouncy eggs in their room! They also completed a Marble Run challenge – they had to design and make a marble run.
To finish off our Science celebrations, we are looking forward to a visit from Dr. Naomi Lavelle of Dr. How’s Science Wows next week when she comes to visit with The Eccentric Energy Show!
