Junior Entrepreneur Project

The  5th & 6th class pupils are taking part in the Junior Entrepreneur Programme and have been working extremely hard on all elements of this programme.

They have set up a company called, ‘Wooden Wonders’ and have designed a number of different wooden slices (see the poster below showing a selection of what they have created).

They have made order slips for anyone who is interested in ordering one of more of their wooden slices and there are some special deals available also.

5th & 6th class will be having a ‘Showcase Event’ in their classroom on Friday, 24th March from 1.50 – 2.50 p.m. where those that come along  will see a selection of the wooden slices they have made.

The pupils hope that customers will be extremely pleased with their ‘Wooden Wonder’ products.

Best of luck 5th & 6th class!

Spring Walk

The Junior Room went on a walk today to look for signs of Spring. We saw buds on trees, daffodils ready to bloom and we heard a lawnmower cutting some grass. We used a checklist to tick off what we saw and heard, and we wrote about and drew things too.

We are going to go again in a few weeks time to see if there are any more signs of Spring. We would love to see some baby animals next time! We loved exploring!

Pitta Pizzas!

We are learning about Procedure writing in English this term and today we followed a recipe written by 3rd and 4th Classes to make delicious pitta pizzas.

We worked in our teams and chose from a range of delicious toppings – we couldn’t wait for them to cook in the oven!

As our pizzas were in the oven, we played with some construction toys in the hall.

Then came the best part! Our pizzas were delicious – we brought the recipe home with us and lots of us plan to make them again.

We also presented our Reader and Handwriter of the Month awards for January in assembly this week – congratulations to all our winners!

Fit for February

We started our Fit for February 2023 challenge today!

We have decided to take on a running challenge this year – the Active School Committee set us a target to run 600 laps of the football pitch during the month of February. Today was our first session and we managed to run 225 laps in 15 minutes. What an amazing start – we might need to increase our target for the month! Well done everyone, great running!

History Walk

On Friday, we went for our January walk. We headed off towards St Brigid’s Church to compare what we see today to an old photo of the church. We looked carefully to see how the church and the area around it had changed and drew a sketch of what we saw.

We completed a loop through Portaliffe and came back to the playground. We really enjoyed exploring more of our local area, as well as fun in the park!

Barnados Internet Safety Speaker

Karen Devine from Barnados joined us in school yesterday to talk about Internet Safety. She spoke to the Middle and Senior Rooms and explained how to stay safe online. She talked about the 4 rules to remember when using the internet – stay safe, think smart, ask for help and reach out.

She also came to speak to the parents last night and it was a most informative and useful session. Thank you Karen.

Welcome Rev. Naomi!

We were delighted to welcome Rev. Naomi Quinn to school this morning for the first time. Rev. Naomi will be working in the Killeshandra Group of Parishes, and we look forward to her getting to know her as she takes some assemblies in school.

Many thanks also to Rev. Richard Waller who shared with us this morning. We have really enjoyed Rev. Richard’s assemblies every month over the last few years (even outside in the cold during Covid times!) and hope he comes back to visit us again in the future.

We also presented our Reader and Handwriter of the Month trophies for December – well done everyone!

Assembly with Colin and Joanna Tinsley

We had a special assembly with Colin and Joanna Tinsley from Hope for Youth Ministries.

We have been fortunate in the past to receive some of the books Colin has written and have we watched some of Colin’s online assemblies, so it was great to have them in school with us today.

Colin and Joanna told us a Bible story and explained the story of the Bible using five colours. We also sang some songs, learned a memory verse and enjoyed a really fun quiz!

Thank you very much to Colin and Joanna, and to Audrey Reilly who arranged their visit today. They left each one of us with a lovely book and a wrist band to remind us of what we learned.

Christmas Party!

We had a wonderful day at our Christmas Party! We played lots of games in the hall with our teams in the morning.

After break, we went back down to the hall to meet some parents, preschools and a very special visitor! Everyone enjoyed some delicious treats, we all received a beautiful present and we sang a few songs for Santa, Mrs Claus and Fionn the dog.

Santa also helped us to draw our Christmas Quiz Sheets – well done to all the winners, we hope you enjoy your prizes!

We came back up to school for lunch and enjoyed playing with our new gifts, before playing more party games for the rest of the afternoon.

Gingerbread

Today was a lovely day in school – we did some Christmas baking! Everyone went to the hall together and we made some delicious gingerbread.

There was lots of weighing and measuring as each group gathered their ingredients.

Then we followed the recipe carefully to rub the butter into the flour before we added the rest of the ingredients and mixed them together to make our gingerbread dough.

Next we rolled out the dough and cut it into some Christmas shapes!

Then it was time to put the gingerbread in the oven – there was a delicious smell in the hall while they were baking!

After lunch, when the gingerbread had cooled, it was time to decorate – we used melted chocolate, sweets, marshmallows and sprinkles to decorate our gingerbread.

Finally, the best part of all, it was time to taste – our gingerbread was delicious! Everyone had some gingerbread to bring home with them, as well as a copy of the recipe – maybe there will be some more gingerbread made at home over the Christmas period!
